What is a BIM modeler?

As a BIM modeler (or if you have the ambition to become one), you are engaged in Building Information Modeling. You create digital 3D models of architectural or infrastructure projects. As a specialist, you ensure that the developed model contains all detailed aspects, from structural details to other architectural elements.

You add additional data to the model. You also keep track of any changes that arise during construction or civil development. In most BIM modeler job openings, we specify that you show ownership of the models you have created. You add the correct materials and dimensions, and even a digital schedule of the project’s activities is included. In addition, you incorporate the costs and maintenance of the relevant buildings or civil works.

What else does a BIM modeler do?

In every BIM modeler job opening, emphasis is placed on multidisciplinary tasks. So in addition to your technical digital skills, you also actively contribute to planning, managing, and executing civil plans related to road and bridge construction, water structures, cabling, and piping systems.

You also check components, installations, and structures for errors. If there are conflicts, such as a pipe running through a beam, you report this to the people who resolve such operational issues. The digital model you manage serves as the live guideline for the work of all parties involved. That is why it is very important that your 3D model is complete, thorough, and accurate.

What education has a BIM modeler completed?

Filling our BIM modeler job opening requires a vocational or higher professional background in architecture or civil engineering. There are also courses and short training programs where you learn to work with modeling software such as Revit, Civil 3D, Tekla, Inventor, or Sofistik. In addition to technical skills, you also learn about communication and collaboration, aspects that are inherent to the role of BIM modeler.

You have broad knowledge in electrical and installation technology. From an architectural perspective, you bring general knowledge of (mechanical) engineering. In short, complex technology is directly linked to this role.

About the salary of a BIM modeler

We have discussed what is required of you, what you need to meet, and how you can shape and develop your own career. But what is a realistic salary for a BIM modeler? The salary range for BIM modelers is estimated between 4000 and about 6000 euros gross per month. For clarity: it is logical that a senior earns a higher hourly rate than a junior.

Beyond this estimate, you are also literally visible in society in your role. The delivered civil and construction projects come directly from your 3D work. They are the results of your effort and the application of smart, future-proof technology.
