About this vacancy
RunWell is an innovative maritime fouling prevention technology, developed by Philips, Damen Shipyards and AkzoNobel, with a mission to decrease environmental impact of the shipping industry by the application of sustainable anti-fouling solutions. As a hands-on Chemical/Mechanical Scientist, you will play a key role in the development of advanced optical systems that further enhance our UV-C emitting anti-fouling and drag-reduction technologies. In this role, you will deepen your expertise while working closely with leading players in the maritime industry as well as with top universities and maritime fouling research and advisory organizations. Your contributions will have real-world impact delivering tremendous fuel savings in the shipping industry by providing an eco-friendly solution, and you will help to position RunWell technology as a global frontrunner in maritime decarbonization.
Key Responsibilities
• Based on your chemical expertise, further develop our UV-C anti-fouling technology with innovative material-concepts and optimize the integral system performance.
• Translate research outcomes into tangible prototypes and business-ready solutions.
• Stay curious and explore external trends and research in combining optics, electronics, mechanics and chemistry, using them to support and enhance ongoing projects.
• Contribute to IP creation by the documentation and protection of new ideas
• Provide input to product road mapping and development plans.
• Engage in hands-on prototyping and experimentation to test and validate creative new solutions in a real-world environment.
• Maintain a collaborative, safe, and supportive work environment, embracing teamwork across disciplines.
• Contribute to collaboration in a multi-disciplinary team, sharing your own growing expertise to help team success. You will be part of a cross-company team, staffed by technical and business experts from Philips and its partners.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
• Development of next-generation RunWell solutions from prototype to cost-effective commercial products.
• Generation of innovative ideas as part of the RunWell product development and the creation of insights that support the Philips RunWell technology roadmap.
• Creation and submission of invention disclosures with potential IP relevance.
• Support of timely and impactful transfer of innovations to product and engineering teams.
What we expect from you
As a chemical scientist we are expecting the following skills and experience
• Bachelor or Master in Material Science, Chemistry, Engineering, or a related field.
• At least 10 years of experience in development related to material selections and their interactions with silicones and mechanical development for prototype building towards commercial products.
• Lab experience, both wet and dry.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills combined with creative thinking.
• Track record in successfully implementing new technologies in products launched in the market.
• Curiosity for how technology translates into business and environmental impact.
• Ability to work hands-on in a collaborative, cross-functional environment.
• Clear communicator and motivated contributor to team goals.
• Excited to make a difference in sustainability and maritime innovation.
