I was exactly looking for this working environment
The Brazilian developer Lucas Cardoso do Carmo lived in Sao Paolo but always dreamt about moving to Europe for work. He had valuable work experiences but aspired for more. So, he started his search in Europe, to see if there was a market for him. “I wanted to explore which companies could (and would) help me to transfer from Brazil to Europe.”
For years, Lucas refined his developer skills and gained valuable work experience. He was happily married, lived in Sao Paolo and liked his work. But he wanted to try something new and move abroad. “Brazil is really big and has lots of different cultures, but it is still only one country. I really wanted to live in Europe. Here you travel in just a few hours to different countries such as Netherlands, France and Germany.”
Not just another employer
Being thirty years old, not having any children and with good working experiences it felt like the time was now. However, the procedure was complicated and lots of visas and documents are needed for the transfer from Brazil to Europe. “I found several companies that had potential: one in the Netherlands, one in England and two in Portugal. As I was talking to them, I noticed how difficult it was to make a decision. All decisions were done remotely and I needed to trust someone via internet, without meeting them in person.” One of the companies Lucas was talking to was TMC. During their conversation they explained what they were looking for. “What they needed was exactly what I would bring to the table. Besides that, I really liked how open they were. They were very transparent and explained how much they would charge to the client, what I would get paid but also how they could (and would) help me move to Europe. That really built the trust. TMC didn’t let me in the dark, and it made me trust the company. It felt like they would be my partner, not just another employer.”
In April 2022 TMC and Lucas agreed they would start the visa request and sponsorship. And while he was waiting for the visa, Lucas already started working for TMC from Brazil. “I was working 100% remotely and had done that before but never for someone I didn’t meet in person. We made agreements, and they followed up on that. They delivered everything they promised. And I did as well. I realized if I would deliver trust, they would give me trust. It sounds simple and seems obvious, but it’s not. It’s a big plus.”
Bitter sweet
In October 2022 Lucas’ visa was approved and he started the process to relocate. His travel was booked for November. “My birthday was November 11th and we would move to Europe on November 15th. There were a lot of tears. It was bitter sweet, but I realized my dream would come true and I counted the days till we left.” Arriving in Portugal was a warm welcome for Lucas and his wife. “I met a lot of people and they helped finding us a place and settling down. And this was only the process of getting here.”
Two months later Lucas had some trouble with a client. “They started to get sketchy and I didn’t like that, so I started to talk to my contact at TMC. I wanted to work in a place where they would appreciate me, where they give me back the trust, I put in.” Although he was frustrated, he still did his best. It was only two weeks later that TMC found him a new client to work for. “The company never had a developer from TMC and I would be a really good fit. Also, they never had an employee 100% working remotely and because of my experience TMC wanted me to be the first one to start at this new company. They told me: the trust you put in, is exactly what they need. You will have some meetings, but mostly you’ll be doing it on your own and by yourself. Not only did TMC listen to me, they also took action and really wanted to help me.”
Best choice
Lucas went up to meet the new client and had a conversation to get to know each other. “The interview was great; the new client was good to me and we liked each other.” They would start a test phase of six months, to see if it would work for both of them. Lucas knew if he would do his work well, the results would speak for itself. Rightfully so. Because within two months, they decided they wanted another developer. “That was really gratifying. It was clear they saw the effort I put in. Nowadays we have two people working for them, including me. It was exactly the working environment I was looking for, and it only happened because TMC took me seriously. Which is very special. I am in a foreign place, but I know if things will go wrong, I can turn to them. Also, if I would not deliver, they will tell me. They are very truthful. Nowadays I am close to the ones that helped me and I really feel they care. This is the reason I choose TMC in the first place. They never stopped delivering. Choosing them, was the best choice I could have made.”
