From cardboard to circular logistics
Within the world of circular manufacturing, it is often the practical processes that determine how much impact you ultimately make. The use of packaging materials may seem like a small element in the chain, but at companies where products move back and forth every day, every choice matters. This became clear during the internship assignment of Jurre Boerekamps, who worked with Faes and Remade in Holland.
Remade in Holland is an independent remanufacturing specialist. The company gives products such as electrical motors a second life and ships large volumes of components every day. Eduard Lebbink, owner of Remade, noticed that an exceptionally large number of cardboard boxes were used for these shipments. The boxes traveled to customers and returned after use, yet each one had a limited lifespan. Eduard wondered whether a more durable and reusable alternative was possible.
An innovative collaboration
At Faes, a producer of cases and packaging solutions, this question was taken seriously from the start. Vincent van Schaick, innovation project manager at Faes, led the process. He is responsible for innovation projects, factory automation, and vertical integration. Within this context, Jurre’s research played a meaningful role. His assignment aligned closely with the ambitions of the circular manufacturing industry. The project encouraged all involved parties to take a fresh look at logistical flows and to develop a system that truly works in a new way.
The goal was clear. Instead of cardboard boxes, the team aimed to introduce a durable wooden box that could be reused many times. Jurre was tasked with making this transition concrete. He analyzed the existing process, mapped out every logistical step, and designed the flowcharts and key points needed to successfully implement the wooden boxes.
From design to practice
The pilot is now underway. The wooden crates have been introduced, the logistical loop has been set up, and the process is running in real operations. The first results are promising. No cardboard is being discarded within this segment and data provided by Faes shows that the carbon footprint has been reduced by half. This demonstrates that circularity not only offers environmental benefits but also leads to more efficient and ultimately more cost conscious processes. Vincent emphasizes that this combination is essential for Faes and its customers.
A solution with broader potential
Although the solution was designed for a specific product flow, Vincent sees opportunities to apply the concept more broadly. In the coming period, Remade will further examine how the wooden boxes perform in daily operations and where improvements can be made. Eduard is confident that the insights provided by Jurre will help strengthen internal logistics even further.
This project illustrates that sustainable progress begins with a shared willingness to rethink existing practices. By examining routines with a critical mindset and staying open to new ideas, we create space for innovations that have a real impact. At TMC we will continue to encourage this approach together with our partners and customers.
