TMC Sustainability Café #2: Modularity
After an inspiring first edition, the TMC Sustainability Café is back with #2! We’re excited to welcome Thijs Schepman, co-founder of Modular 5, as our keynote speaker. He'll show how modularity can be both technically advanced and environmentally conscious — enabling businesses to reduce waste, extend product life cycles, and accelerate innovation. Thijs brings a unique perspective at the intersection of entrepreneurship, engineering, and sustainability.
Why modularity?
Modular design means creating systems from building blocks — parts that can be added, replaced, or upgraded independently. This approach unlocks major technical and business benefits:
- Faster development and repair
- Lower lifecycle costs
- Easier upgrades and product customization
- Reduced dependence on full replacements
Modularity = sustainability
Beyond performance, modularity is a driver of sustainability. By enabling repairability and reusability, modular systems drastically reduce material consumption, waste streams, and CO₂ emissions. They form the foundation for circular business models — from refurbishment to product-as-a-service strategies.
